Dr. Nathaniel Roybal, MD, PhD

Founder, Retina Consultants of New Mexico

Seeing a Better Way Forward

Dr. Nathaniel Roybal is a board-certified retina specialist who believes there’s always a better way to care for patients—and he’s made it his life’s work to find it. A native New Mexican from Mora, he founded Retina Consultants of New Mexico to bring world-class retina care home, where patients could receive cutting-edge treatments without having to leave the state they love.

From New Mexico, For New Mexico

Born and raised in Mora, Dr. Roybal learned early the value of community, hard work, and perseverance. After graduating from Mosquero High School, he earned his degree in Animal and Range Sciences from New Mexico State University, where he was honored as the outstanding senior of his class.
He then became part of the first graduating class of the combined MD/PhD program at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine, earning both degrees in 2007.

Challenging the Status Quo Through Innovation

Driven to push the boundaries of what’s possible in vision care, Dr. Roybal completed the prestigious EyeSTAR post-doctoral fellowship and ophthalmology residency at the UCLA Stein Eye Institute. His research explored gene and stem cell therapies for retinal diseases such as macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa—work that continues to shape modern treatment approaches today.
He then advanced his expertise through a fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at the University of Iowa, where he helped pioneer the use of proteomics to personalize care for patients with retinal diseases.

By combining science, technology, and compassion, Dr. Roybal continually challenges traditional approaches to deliver better outcomes for his patients.

Making a Meaningful Impact

For Dr. Roybal, success isn’t just measured in restored vision—it’s in the lives changed. His mission is to improve how people experience care by creating a practice that puts patients first, empowers his team, and gives back to the community that raised him.
Every decision at Retina Consultants of New Mexico reflects this purpose: to find better ways, challenge what’s always been done, and create lasting impact—one patient at a time.

Beyond the Practice

Outside of medicine, Dr. Roybal is a devoted husband, father, and mentor. He continues to invest in the next generation of medical professionals and serves his community with the same care and curiosity that define his work. Whether he’s helping someone see more clearly or inspiring a future doctor to see new possibilities, his commitment remains the same:

To make life better by helping others see better.

Sincerely,

C. Nathaniel Roybal
